Why can't I...

....have an early ultrasound with any of my pregnancies? It seems like every pregnant lady I know has had an ultrasound by 13 weeks. Why can’t I? Once again I have to wait until forever to find out if my baby even has a heartbeat. Last time I could’ve found out by 5-6 wks that their was no heartbeat, but instead I didn’t find out until I was in my 14th week. Harsh! The doctor says I can’t have an ultrasound this time too until I’m 20 weeks. And he probably won’t be able to hear a heartbeat for another few weeks or more. So all you ladies out there that have gotten your early ultrasounds.... how’d you pull that off? How did you get your doctor to let you have one? And why can’t I have one?

When you find out - let me know. I never got an early one with either of mine. It was so hard to wait...

Oh! And, believe it or not, I am SO jealous of your primary calling. I am getting pretty sick of teaching moody Mia Maids :)

That is weird, they should get you one, especially if you've had a miscarriage before. Did you ask for one? You should just make up a reason hat you are very worried, and they should give you one. that is just ridiculous they wont give you one. GOOD LUCK.

Ya I've asked. Numerous times. I've even seen more than one doctor about it. I've told them how paranoid I am, etc. NOTHING!! Grrrr

I never got one with Elise (and I had the same thing happen to me with the pregnancy before her)...however with Thomas I was paranoid that it was too much like the pregnancy I miscarried so my Dr. happened to have a ultrasound machine in his office(we were in the U.S. of course) so he did a quick check for the heartbeat for me. He also sent me for an ultrasound at about 10 wks though to check the dates...I told him the exact dates but they "wanted to be sure" (my dates were right on anyway). But then I never got another ultrasound.
I feel for ya!

Ok, if you have good insurance (and I don't know how Canada works), you could always go into your emergency room and tell them that you've had really bad cramping and you think that you are having another miscarriage. They would definitely do an ultrasound then! I know it's totally dishonest, but it's an idea! Also, they have something called Fetal Fotos here and they can give you confirmation ultrasounds for a fee and also tell you the sex of the baby sooner than you can find out at your doctors! I never can wait so we always do that option!

I CAN'T BELIEVE they won't do an in-office ultrasound! My doc has a portable machine that he brings in and I got one done every visit until I was out of the clear. You could also maybe check with a different OBGYN.

Hope that helps hun! I really hope you can get peace of mind soon!

Tell them you aren't sure of your last period date and they will give you one at 12 weeks to make sure of when you are due! Try it seriously. I didn't even have to ask and they wanted to check my dates anyways, even though I was pretty sure of mine. I dunno but seriously try that. Also ya in Calgary only parents, grandparents and siblings OF THE BABY, can visit. My sisters or grandparents couldn't come see kyla. But at the same time it is nice cuz you really do need your rest, especially me now! I think it'll be not too bad, thats why were were going to deliver in high river, but oh well! I did like calgary, they were nice there.

I called my doctor and demanded that I have an ultrasound. I told them I just didn't feel confortable and uneasy. They got me right in.

I think it is a Calgary thing because my sister-in-law from Lethbridge (allie) didn't get one either. I didn't even ask my doc for one, she just sent me in for one. I am so sorry hun, we think that they should totally send you for one. Think positive though, I am sure all is well=)

Strange. Here, in the US I know people that get one EVERY appointment (seems odd...) then some docs don't do one until 20 weeks. My doctor happened to have an old machine in the office, so for sanity sake, on the first appointment when it is too early to hear/find a heartbeat he took us into the other room and did a quick ultrasound. I dunno, I would try Amanda's suggestion, worked for her!

I never got an early one either. My friends who were lucky enough told the dr that they weren't sure of their dates and they got one right away! I'm feeling for you!!!! Keep pushing the Dr's!!!!
